Writing

The pictures above were taken at the second swim meet of the season at Carlmont High School. Due to COVID-19 protocols, the meet was live streamed. Nonetheless, the swimmers from bother JV and Varsity had an amazing experience and it was wonderful to hear about their experiences on the team. This story was specifically beneficial to Scots Scoop because swim was one of the first sports that were able to participate in 2021. I was trilled to be able to cover such an important and exiting event.

JV baseball team dominates Capuchino
Here, Sophomore Rintaro Sato swings his first run of the game. This story covered the second game between Carlmont and Capuchino High School. The Carlmont JV was determine to score their first win against the Capuchino team because they had defeated them in the game prior. Soon enough, the Scots dominated the mustangs with a final score of 6-3. This story was quite fun to cover, many of my classmates were participating in the game so it was exiting to watch and observe. I interviewed several players and coaches to dig deep into what makes the team so functional. As a result, this story discussed not only the duration of the game but the work ethic and drive of the team.

This story has a special place in my heart. The Half Moon Bay’s pumpkin patch farm was the first BEAT article I had written. Coming into the Media Arts program I was intimidated, I strived to present my best efforts and claim my place as a journalist. As a new writer, navigating my way though the field of an interview was challenging to say the least. My father and I drove all the way down to the 4-C’s Pumpkin Farm and I conducted my first interview. Although my determination was strong, the outcome of my writing needed some assistance. However, with the help of my editor I was able to publish an informational and festive article. Thus, the began my writing career at Carlmont.

A day of training for the JV football team
Carlmont JV’s first-team offense battles against their defense.

In the second semester as a Media Arts student, I transitioned my way to the football field for a new story. This story covered a day of training for the JV football team. I observed the entire duration of the game and distinguished their techniques and strategies when training for an upcoming game. However, due to COVID-19 many of the traditional drills and warm-ups coach Dan Nelson preferred to train the players with were at the time, unavailable. Nonetheless, it was interesting to write about a topic in which the team is placed under such frustrating circumstances. The JV players did not fail to prevail as they continued to earn their victories throughout the season.
